Dr. David Miranda – ADVANCEMENTS IN TELEMEDICINE

Texas-based physician Dr. David Anthony Miranda explores advances in telemedicine as the practice continues to grow in prevalence.

Growing in parallel with the ever more widespread adoption of the internet since the 1990s—both in the U.S. and globally—two decades on, the prevalence of telemedicine continues to rise, according to Dr. David Anthony Miranda, an experienced urgent care physician based in San Antonio, Texas.

Initially facilitated by early internet protocols allowing for the transfer of medical images, telemedicine practices soon evolved to include real-time audio and video consultation solutions, as well as means of communicating vital signs and other important medical measurements.

“Significant advances in technology during the last twenty years or so have seen telemedicine really take off,” suggests Dr. Miranda.

Advances which have facilitated this growth in the prevalence of telemedicine include improved data transfer and communication speeds, the routine digitization of information, more cost-effective data storage, standardization of data formats, improved data security standards, and the adoption of newer, more advanced programming languages.

“Telemedicine truly took off in the U.S. with the switch to electronic medical records and the launch of so-called ‘patient portals,'” adds Dr. Miranda, “originally led by government incentives.”

These patient portals, Dr. Miranda explains, allow individuals to find out their recent lab results, refill any necessary prescriptions, and send secure, direct messages to their doctor via the internet.

“Patients and medical professionals alike are becoming more tech-savvy,” he adds, “demonstrated by the continued growth of telemedicine and services such as physician-patient portals, both of which have been made all the more easy to access thanks to smartphones and other internet-enabled mobile devices.”

This is especially pertinent to the ongoing growth of what’s become known as ‘telemedicine 2.0,’ according to Dr. Miranda. “Reliant on so-called ‘web 2.0’ technologies, this latest branch of telemedicine is the most advanced yet,” adds the physician.

Employing existing technology and devices—such as modern laptops and smartphones—telemedicine 2.0 relies on standard web infrastructures and increasingly readily available diagnostics tools for gathering information. Examples of such tools range from smartphone cameras and vital sign monitoring devices to digital stethoscopes and wearable biosensors.

“I firmly believe that telemedicine is here to stay,” adds Dr. Miranda, wrapping up, “with many medical facilities now becoming providers of ‘hybrid’ healthcare, whereby which patients may see their physician either in person or via a telemedicine solution – arguably one of the most significant implementations and rollouts of telemedicine to date.”
